How to be a Rockstar Wordpress Designer Book Review

wp_200x200WordPress is an impressive open source blog engine and it’s been a long time since I have been this enthusiastic about a new application. WordPress is easy to extend and manage; not an easy feat to achieve. Enough praise about this great app, let’s get to the book.

I know the basics about Wordpress, built a few blogs, created custom templates and even a few very simple plugins but I find it easier to grasp something new when someone else has written a book filled with real world examples. That is exactly what “How to be a ROCKSTAR WordPress Designer” is. The book covers a lot of ground from the basics to what else can WordPress be used for.

The concepts of blog design, how to move your design comps from Photoshop to HTML, explaining “the loop”, how to extend your template without writing a plugin, basic plugin building, splitting your template into multiple files, widgets and everything else you need to get from not knowing anything about building a WordPress theme to a ninja in no time.

My favorite part is the final chapter in the book that lists “Innovative Ways to Use WordPress“, and the items listed are truly innovative. The diversity of uses show just how powerful yet simple WordPress really is.

This book has answered a lot of questions I had when trying to sift through the WordPress API documentation and even a lot of online examples I had downloaded and reviewed. Collis Ta’eed and Harley Alexander have done an incredible job writing this book and I can’t wait to read the others available from the Rockable Press.

  11. Wordpress is definitely the easiest and fastest website management system to set up, and has everything you need to make a ‘real’ website with advanced functions like forum, gallery, event calendar, classifieds – what do you want more? I’m very curious about the ‘innovative ways to use it’ of the book you’re recommending.
